Guanajuato reinforces prevention against measles with 14 macro-centers. Learn about the dates and requirements to vaccinate minors and adults up to 49 years of age.

The Ministry of Health of Guanajuato (SSG) reported that there are already 14 macro-centers and more than 450 vaccination posts against measles in Guanajuato, distributed in various municipalities of the State to reinforce herd immunity.

Although the agency pointed out that at this time there is no active transmission of the virus in Guanajuato territory, it stressed the importance of the population knowing the characteristics of this disease and maintaining their complete vaccination schedule to avoid outbreaks.

“If you get the measles vaccine, locate your nearest Macrocenter and go as soon as possible. You can also go to the vaccination point in your municipality. It is fast, it protects you and yours,” said Dr. Gabriel Cortés Alcalá, head of the state agency.

To go to these points, the authorities request to bring their National Health Card for registration of the dose and previously review the specific requirements for each age group before presenting themselves at the headquarters.

Children aged 1218 months, and 6 years old should be vaccinated, or if they belong to the group of 10 to 49 years old and do not have a history of vaccination,” reads the bulletin published on February 12, clarifying that those over 50 years of age do not require it.

What is measles?

It is a highly contagious viral disease that is transmitted by droplets of saliva when coughing or sneezing.

Although it spreads very easily in enclosed spaces, it can be effectively prevented by measles vaccination in Guanajuato.

Among the most frequent symptoms are:

  • Fever
  • nasal congestion
  • red or irritated eyes
  • small spots inside the mouth and a rash on the skin that starts on the face, and
  • It gradually spreads to the rest of the body.

If the disease is not treated in time, it can cause serious complications and permanent sequelae, mainly affecting minors and people with compromised immune systems.

Recommendations for the population

The Ministry of Health emphasized that immunization is the main prevention measure.

There are two biological ones:

  1. the MMR vaccine for children, and
  2. The double viral (SR) vaccine is aimed at adolescents and adults who are not sure of their dose.

To prevent the disease, the school community can help by reviewing the children’s cards and going to the People’s Health Center if any dose is missing, avoiding self-medication in the event of any suspicious symptoms.

Other general recommendations include keeping classrooms and common areas ventilated, performing frequent hand hygiene with soap and water, and keeping classrooms, furniture, and shared surfaces clean.

Finally, it is urged to verify that infants have complete schemes. If respiratory symptoms occur, you should rest, avoid attending school and wear a mask to protect others, as prevention is everyone’s task.
