Two dogs were attacked by a jaguar in an area near the jungle in Mahahual, in southern Quintana Roo. According to reports, the pets were in homes with reinforced structures; however, the feline managed to attack them.

After being alerted by neighbors, personnel from the Proyecto Akk Mahahual association went to the site to provide assistance. The two dogs had injuries resulting from the jaguar attack and received veterinary care and medication for their recovery.

The organization reported that the feline did not attack any people and indicated that its presence in inhabited areas is due to the search for food. They stated that the reduction of its habitat and the decrease in its natural prey have caused the jaguar in Mahahual to move into areas where there are domestic animals.

Members of associations and residents recalled that the jaguar in Quintana Roo is an endangered species. They explained that habitat fragmentation and poaching contribute to the feline’s movement into populated areas. It was reiterated that jaguars do not directly attack humans and generally avoid contact with people.

Following the incident, residents of coastal areas and areas near the jungle were asked to secure their pets and farm animals to reduce risks. Organizations emphasized that public cooperation is crucial in addressing these cases and preventing further attacks on dogs and other domestic animals in Quintana Roo.
