A judge ordered two officers from the Jalisco State Security Secretariat’s Traffic Police to stand trial for bribery, after they allegedly demanded money from a motorist in exchange for not impounding his vehicle in Zapopan.
At a hearing held in the Puente Grande courthouse, Judge Susana Azzaid Betancourt, of the First Control and Oral Proceedings Court, determined that there was sufficient evidence to initiate criminal proceedings against Atenas Donaji “N” and Gabriela Guadalupe “N”. The crime they are charged with penalizes public servants who solicit money or any bribe “to do or refrain from doing something related to their employment, position, or commission,” according to the Jalisco State Penal Code.
According to the investigation file, the incident occurred in February 2025 at the intersection of Avenida Patria and Boulevard Puerta de Hierro. The officers pulled over a high-end vehicle after noticing that it did not have its front license plate in the correct location.
The driver explained that the vehicle had demonstrator plates and was not his property, as he worked at a car dealership and was conducting test drives. After reviewing the documentation and confirming it was in order, the officers allegedly told him they could impound the car because the license plate was not visible and demanded 6,000 pesos to allow him to leave.
According to the complaint, after being pressured, the driver made an electronic transfer of 5,000 pesos. He then went to the Specialized Prosecutor’s Office for Combating Corruption, where he filed the complaint that initiated the investigation.
As precautionary measures, the judge ordered that both defendants not leave the country without judicial authorization, refrain from approaching victims and witnesses or going to the places where they may be, and sign in periodically with the State Unit for Precautionary Measures for the next six months.
