Sheinbaum justifies construction of desalination plant in Rosarito, Baja California

This Friday, Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum justified the installation of a seawater desalination plant in Rosarito, Baja California, due to its location on the Pacific Ocean, and the rejection of building one in Sonora because of its potential damage to the Gulf of California.

Sheinbaum reiterated that the main issue with desalination plants is determining what to do with the salt; in some cases, it is returned to the ocean, and in others, it is dried and then used.

She stated that the Gulf of California has a very high level of biodiversity, and therefore, an environmental impact study must be conducted in Sonora or the upper Gulf.

The National Water Commission (Conagua) has an infographic on its official website about the desalination plant being built with an investment of 12 billion pesos. Its objective is to benefit approximately one million people in Baja California, providing 2,200 liters per second of drinking water to Tijuana and Playas de Rosarito.

This week, the weekly newspaper Zeta Tijuana reported that Governor Marina del Pilar, a member of the Morena party, had taken out a loan of nearly 3 billion pesos—2.96 billion pesos in total—to finance complementary works at the Rosarito and San Quintín desalination plants.

This loan was approved on February 4 by Morena party legislators and their allies.
