Hours after the call between Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo and Donald J. Trump, the president of Mexico convened a meeting at the National Palace. Adán Augusto López, coordinator of the Morena party in the Senate, and Ricardo Monreal, coordinator of the Morena parliamentary group in the Chamber of Deputies, arrived at the president’s office on Monday afternoon.
🔹The timing of the conversation between the Morena legislative leaders and President Sheinbaum coincides with a report published by The Wall Street Journal: high-level Mexican government officials have been discussing what stance to take regarding President Donald Trump’s “untenable demands.” This refers to the arrest of Mexican politicians linked to organized crime. The information coincides with what a high-ranking Mexican government official told The New York Times over the weekend: that the possibility of prosecuting Mexican politicians with ties to cartels has been raised within Claudia Sheinbaum’s administration in order to appease the United States government.
🔹According to a source consulted by Código Magenta, the possibility of making Senator Adán Augusto López one of the Mexican government’s legal targets has been discussed in circles within the U.S. justice system.
🔹Officially, the meeting between Sheinbaum, Monreal, and López Hernández was intended to define the 12 legislative priorities of the Fourth Transformation government. Upon leaving the National Palace, Monreal told the media that the foundations of the congressional agenda for the upcoming ordinary session were discussed: electoral reforms, recall referendums, constitutional immunity, and measures to combat organized crime, among others. 🔹However, the pessimistic tone of the call between Sheinbaum and Trump, as well as the capture of Nicolás Maduro in Venezuela, shape a new reality in the bilateral relationship. Within the Mexican government, there is a belief that this could have domestic political consequences in the short term. This week, the President of Mexico quietly summoned political operatives from the Fourth Transformation government in the states to the National Palace to discuss cabinet changes, according to a source with access to the Presidency consulted by Código Magenta.
🔹Before meeting with President Sheinbaum, Monreal and López Hernández attended a political meeting with Rosa Icela Rodríguez, Secretary of the Interior; Luisa María Alcalde, National Leader of Morena; Ignacio Mier, Federal Deputy; and Arturo Zaldívar, General Coordinator of Politics and Government of the Presidency.
