Just days before the mandatory phone registration period began, users on WhatsApp discovered a glaring flaw in the system: it’s possible to register phone lines using anyone’s data.
🤖 The method is chilling. They’re sharing the CURP (Mexican national ID number), INE (Mexican voter ID number), and AI-generated videos of Senator Gerardo Fernández Noroña to bypass facial recognition. And worse: they’re publishing evidence that it works.
The technical problem is serious. The “proof of life” system doesn’t validate in real time, allowing the use of official ID images obtained from the internet to impersonate anyone.
👤 Noroña isn’t the only one. Reports also indicate that the data of Andrés Manuel López Obrador and Claudia Sheinbaum has been used to register phone lines without their consent. Anyone can register anyone.
Ricardo Salinas Pliego reacted on X: “Not even Noroña deserves to run this risk, caused by enacting stupid laws with the sole intention of monitoring, extorting, and controlling the people from a position of power.” The government claims that mobile operators protect data under the Personal Data Protection Law. But if the system can’t even verify that it’s you registering, what good is that protection?
📅 The deadline to register your phone line is June 30. Starting July 1, unregistered lines will be suspended.
A law meant to combat extortion that can’t even prevent identity theft. The irony speaks for itself.
