The National Water Commission (CONAGUA) anticipates a particularly dry year for Ciudad Valles and the Huasteca region. It has confirmed that the dry season has already begun and is expected to be severe, with rainfall well below the annual average.
This warning was issued by the local director of CONAGUA, Darío Fernando González Castillo, who also assured residents that the water supply is guaranteed, as preventative measures are being implemented to maintain the levels of the Valles River, the main water source.
This information was shared at the meeting of the Valles River Basin Committee, where it was explained that coordinated efforts are underway with municipal authorities to preserve the river and prevent serious damage during the dry season.
Agreement Reached to Guarantee Water Flow at Tamul Waterfall
Regarding the region’s tourist attractions, it was affirmed that Tamul Waterfall will be preserved and will not dry up as it has in previous years. Authorities reiterated their call for responsible water use, taking into account the weather conditions forecast for this year in the region.
It was reiterated that, in order to guarantee the availability of water at Tamul Waterfall during the peak holiday season of Holy Week, the tourism and sugarcane sectors reached an agreement, mediated by the National Water Commission (Conagua), to suspend agricultural irrigation in the Gallinas River from March 26 to April 10.
This agreement was reached at the Gallinas River Basin meeting held in Tamasopo. This agreement will increase the likelihood that the main tourist attraction of Aquismón and Tamasopo, and of the Huasteca region, will have water, benefiting visitors to the area during this period.
The National Water Commission also noted that there are reports that the level of the Valles River has decreased in recent days, which has attracted attention, so investigations have been initiated to determine the cause, without ruling out the possibility that the vital element is being extracted for agricultural irrigation.
