The president of the Mexican Association of Hotels and Motels (AMHM), Miguel Fong González, expressed confidence that the tourism industry will perform better in 2026 compared to last year, when occupancy rates dropped considerably in the first half of the year, including in Quintana Roo. Although they managed to recover by the end of the year, they did not meet expectations.
He said that the decline in traveler traffic last year caused concern in the sector, given that all tourist destinations in the country, with the exception of Los Cabos, experienced negative growth. However, the important thing is that by the last quarter, there was a rebound, and occupancy rates reached over 80 percent.
“2025 began with low occupancy rates throughout the country, due to various factors, including the Trump effect and the lack of airline seats.”
“Fortunately, occupancy increased in the second half of the year, although it was not enough to meet the expectations set by the sector.”
He mentioned that expectations are higher for 2026, with Mexico co-hosting the FIFA World Cup with Canada and the United States benefiting the industry and, in particular, the Mexican Caribbean due to its connectivity.
“It’s going to be a dynamic year, and we’re confident that the numbers will be better. There’s a lot of excitement surrounding the sporting event.”
“We’re all working to attract the largest possible number of fans who will travel to the country; Cancún’s connectivity with the host cities will have a positive impact.”
