Members of the Querétaro State College of Small Animal Veterinarians (Cemvepeq) reported that veterinarians will not provide care to individuals who identify as “therians,” as their specialization is animal health.
Paulina González Arredondo, president of the College, emphasized that veterinarians specialize in the care of animals and stated that they are not even trained to treat humans.
“Well, that’s a matter of personal perception, but veterinarians are not trained to treat humans. Our specialization is the care of animals, not humans, so if someone were to come seeking medical attention, we simply couldn’t provide it,” she commented.
Teresa Silis Moreno, secretary of the College, stated that if this trend were to grow and they were asked for medical attention, they would need support from physicians specializing in human medicine; she also mentioned that the issue should be addressed from a psychological perspective.
“We also have to be frank here. We are specialists in animal health, and I think this aspect could perhaps involve a bit more psychoanalysis, psychiatry, and so on. So, if the trend grows, we might work hand in hand with specialists in these human aspects, but today we don’t have the capacity to work with this situation. Therefore, we would leave this to specialists in human behavior,” he said.
Meanwhile, Rubén Novelo Barrera, treasurer of the College, considered that this trend could even lead to the crime of bestiality, and therefore called for caution regarding this type of behavior that has gone viral. He also noted that, so far, no one has identified themselves as such and requested veterinary medical attention.
“Deep down, it could be, doors are opening that aren’t clear today; they’re fads, they’re trends. People suddenly look for mechanisms, channels for their ideas, for their new behaviors, but we have to be very cautious because it can give rise to this type of behavior where they start demanding and having other situations that even involve a veterinarian or someone else being involved, or this type of technique,” he added.
