During the daily morning press conference, known as “La Mañanera,” on Thursday, February 19, federal authorities presented a report on the development of new railway projects in the country, including the section that will connect Mazatlán with Los Mochis, in the state of Sinaloa.

Commander Ricardo Vallejo Suárez explained that this segment represents one of the greatest technical challenges due to its length and characteristics. He detailed that the route covers 529 kilometers, of which approximately 400 will utilize the existing right-of-way, currently used for freight, and 129 kilometers will be newly constructed, with the goal of linking communities such as Guamúchil, Guasave, and ultimately Los Mochis.

“The Mazatlán-Los Mochis route is a major undertaking. It’s 529 kilometers, of which 400 share the existing freight rail line within the right-of-way, and 129 kilometers are a new route to connect towns like Guamúchil, Guasave, and finally Los Mochis—we’ll see how that works later,” the commander explained.

The federal official indicated that the project is approximately 20 percent complete. Currently, working groups are being held to define the final route, the location of stations and stops, and the technical guidelines that will govern the construction. Afterward, the process of engaging with state and municipal authorities and the public is expected to begin.

“We’re 20 percent complete, we’re deployed along all sections, and we’re holding constant technical meetings to define the preliminary route, determine the locations of the stations and stops, establish the terms of reference, and then, in coordination with the train agency, share the project with the states, municipalities, and the residents themselves,” he concluded.

In the case of Guasave, it was noted that communities like Estación Bamoa and León Fonseca already have rail infrastructure, so Mayor Cecilia Ramírez Montoya has expressed her intention to formally include the municipality in the route.

The train project known as “El Sinaloense” includes dedicated passenger tracks, a length of approximately 440 kilometers between Mazatlán and Los Mochis, and speeds of up to 200 kilometers per hour, which would strengthen regional connectivity in the northwest of the country.
