During January, the Environment and Animal Welfare Unit (UMABA) of the Mérida City Council in Yucatán received a total of 215 reports of alleged animal abuse, a figure that the head of the department, Raúl Escalante, described as “significant.”
Despite the high volume of reports, the municipal official commented that the city’s response capacity showed significant improvement, as they were able to address 90 percent of the cases registered last month. This was made possible by the implementation of brigades from the Animal Protection Unit (UPA).
He emphasized that four teams of municipal workers handle citizen reports in morning and afternoon shifts, which allows for the timely response to these complaints. He added that the work is facilitated by the fact that Mérida residents are now more aware of the importance of reporting abuse.
