This Sunday, February 22, authorities in Baja California Sur reported that they remain on high alert and have reinforced security operations in place, following the national confirmation of the death of Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, identified as the leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), during a federal operation in Jalisco.

The state governor, Víctor Manuel Castro Cosío, reported that, following the events in other states, it was decided to maintain active inter-institutional coordination on security matters and strengthen preventative efforts in various parts of Baja California Sur.

“The State Security Council remains in permanent session, reinforcing surveillance, patrols, and preventative checkpoints throughout the state. At this time, no significant incidents have been reported, and the situation remains under control, with no risk to the public. We continue working in coordination with federal forces and local agencies to preserve peace and tranquility in Baja California Sur,” the governor stated.

Preventive measures were also implemented in the municipality of Los Cabos. The city council’s general secretary, Alberto Rentería Santana, announced that the municipal corporation is maintaining coordination with authorities at all three levels of government, within the framework of the Regional Security Council, in order to monitor the national situation.

“Regarding the events currently unfolding in various cities across the country, under the instructions of Mayor Christian Agúndez Gómez, the Municipal Public Security Directorate is on alert and coordinating preventative actions in conjunction with the federal and state agencies that comprise the Regional Security Council in the Los Cabos City Hall. As of this time, there are no reports of any extraordinary incidents. We ask that you remain attentive to official communication channels,” the official stated.

As of press time, Los Cabos is the only municipality that has issued a specific public statement regarding the measures adopted in response to the national situation.

The activation of protocols in Baja California Sur comes after Army special forces carried out an operation in the municipality of Tapalpa, Jalisco, where Oseguera Cervantes, considered a high-priority target for Mexican and U.S. authorities, was killed.

Following these events, roadblocks, vehicle burnings, and armed clashes were reported in the Guadalajara metropolitan area and in states such as Guanajuato, Michoacán, Aguascalientes, and Nayarit—which border Jalisco—as well as in parts of Tamaulipas, Baja California, and Zacatecas, according to reports disseminated nationwide.

Given this situation, authorities in Baja California Sur reiterated that preventive patrols and coordination among the three levels of government are ongoing, while urging citizens to stay informed through official channels.
