Is Cancun airport open? Flights canceled or delayed because hundreds of travelers are stranded.

Operations continue at Cancún International Airport, but widespread delays and cancellations have left hundreds of travelers stranded and struggling to rearrange their plans. The disruptions also affected Benito Juárez International Airport, amplifying the travel chaos at two of Mexico’s busiest air hubs.

According to Rolling Out, the two airports saw a combined total of 62 delays and 29 cancellations. Cancún was the hardest hit, with 40 delayed flights and 23 cancellations, while Mexico City reported 22 delays and six cancellations.

These disruptions come during one of the busiest travel periods of the year, creating ripple effects for international tourists, business travelers, and domestic commuters.

Several carriers operating domestic and international routes were affected. Rolling Out reports that Aeromexico has experienced three cancellations and 10 delays. American Airlines had one cancellation and two delays, while Volaris had six delays. Avianca and Delta Air Lines also reported delays.

Passengers at both airports reported long lines, extended waits, and confusion as airlines worked to reorganize their schedules.

For travelers with close connections, delays of several hours can result in missed tours, hotel reservations, and unexpected expenses.

Cancun, which welcomed more than 29 million visitors last year, serves as a key gateway connecting North America and Europe to Mexico’s Caribbean coast. Even minor disruptions can quickly spill over into airline rotation schedules and crew assignments.

Aviation authorities and travel reports cite several contributing factors, including increased passenger numbers, operational pressures on airlines, crew availability, and weather-related disruptions.

As Travel and Tour World has pointed out, the burden of diverting planes and assisting passengers falls largely on the airlines and airport operations teams when delays accumulate.

Travelers heading to any of the airports are advised to check their flight status through official airport portals or airline apps before heading to the terminal. Mexican passenger rights regulations generally allow travelers to rebook or receive a refund for canceled flights, and passengers are encouraged to speak directly with airline representatives about their options.

Even if airports remain open, ongoing disruptions mean travelers should expect delays and allow additional time for operations to stabilize.
