After several hours of a blockade on the Pan-American Highway, in the San Manuel area, between Ingenio Santo Domingo and Santiago Niltepec, authorities carried out an operation to remove the protesters, who were demanding the removal of a group of teachers from the College of Scientific and Technological Studies of the State of Oaxaca (CECyTE).

The blockade had been set up by parents who were demanding the immediate removal of four teachers from CECyTE. The teachers in question are Edna Musalem, Leyta Castillo, Miguel Hernández Blas, and Carlos Antonio, whom they accuse of alleged psychological abuse, violence, and acts of discrimination against approximately 20 students.

The protesters stated that, as a result of this situation, classes remain in virtual mode, which has generated discontent among the school community, as they demand that the 163 students at the school return to in-person classes and that academic normalcy be restored.

According to testimonies, the teachers allegedly made discriminatory comments toward students for belonging to the Ikoots indigenous community of San Dionisio del Mar.

Carmela Gallegos, the mother of two students, stated that they have filed complaints with the Attorney General’s Office and human rights organizations without receiving a response. They warned that they will continue their protests until the accused teachers are dismissed and a safe and violence-free environment is guaranteed for their children.

The blockade prevented access to the eastern part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec and the connection with the state of Chiapas. The police action resulted in one arrest and at least two injuries, according to the protesters themselves.
