The Consortium for Parliamentary Dialogue and Equity reported that 303 femicides have been perpetrated in the last three years in municipalities across the various regions of the state of Oaxaca, reflecting a crisis of femicidal violence “that is neither stopped nor addressed with real urgency.”
The most recent crime, they mentioned, is the femicide of teacher Zeltzin Rubí Ortiz in Santa María Lachichina, a community in the Sierra Norte region of the state.
They also recalled that on October 15, 2025, teacher Fabiola Ortiz Medina was also murdered near the high school where she worked in Putla Villa de Guerrero. “Her family and friends continue to await progress in the investigations, encountering so far the indifference of the authorities, which only contributes to perpetuating impunity,” they added.
In a statement, the group demanded justice for teachers Zeltzin Rubí and Fabiola Ortiz, as well as for the 303 femicides recorded in the last three years; immediate investigations with due diligence, a gender perspective, an intersectional approach, and without revictimization; zero tolerance for all forms of violence against women and children; and an end to institutional impunity and the protection of perpetrators of violence within the state.
The Rosario Castellanos Women’s Studies Group (GESMujer) stated that the femicide of teacher Zeltzin Ortiz, originally from San Pedro Tlaxiaco, is evidence that femicidal violence persists in Oaxaca and exposes institutional failures.
GESMujer criticized the State Attorney General’s Office for initiating the investigation as a homicide, despite a resolution passed in January 2016 by the local Chamber of Deputies urging that all violent deaths of women be investigated as femicides from the outset. Following this statement, the Prosecutor’s Office reported that the teacher’s murder is being investigated as a femicide.
