The city of Oaxaca awoke to a series of protests by various organizations and unions, including road blockades, the occupation of government offices, and a march.
Early this morning, faculty and students from the Faculty of Law and Social Sciences occupied the University City campus due to an internal political conflict over the appointment of a new Director.
Last week, the Rector’s Office of the Autonomous University “Benito Juárez” of Oaxaca (UABJO) announced it would assume control of the Faculty of Law and Social Sciences, citing irregularities in an assembly where Fredy Sánchez García was appointed as the new Director.
Those who occupied University City today demanded that the Rector’s Office respect the Faculty’s general assembly, appoint a new Director, and accused the state government of interfering in the Faculty’s internal affairs.
Simultaneously, a group of workers from the Independent Force of the Ministry of Health blocked Independencia Avenue in the center of the state capital, demanding the delivery of their appointments, which provide them with job security as employees of this agency and protect them during the transition to the IMSS-Bienestar system, scheduled to take place this month.
Other unions in the health sector blocked Vasconcelos Boulevard, in front of the Conciliation and Arbitration Board. Their demand is the same: the lack of job security under the new IMSS-Bienestar system, which leaves staff in the regularized, formalized, and contract categories in a state of uncertainty.
The Popular Revolutionary Front (FPR), for its part, occupied the facilities of the Ministry of Welfare and the National Institute of Indigenous Peoples (INPI) of the Federal Government, as well as the facilities of the Judicial City complex, to demand responses to social and justice demands, as well as requests for housing, roads, and educational infrastructure, among others.
In addition, a group of people took over the Huitzo toll booth, and there were blockades on various streets in the historic center of the city of Oaxaca.
