Just days before the start of Holy Week vacation, a massive fire that lasted at least five hours consumed restaurants, cabins, shops, and homes in the Punta Zicatela tourist area of Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca.

The blaze began after 1:00 a.m. and spread rapidly because most of the restaurant and palapa roofs were made of dried palm thatch.

“As of this time, a total of 40 cabins have been lost. Fifteen shops, 20 commercial spaces, and 15 palapas were also completely destroyed,” reported Román Valencia, mayor of Santa María Colotepec.

Firefighters, along with local service providers, battled the fire, which was finally extinguished at 6:00 a.m. this Friday.

Civil Protection in Puerto Escondido has ruled out any injuries or missing persons, reporting only significant material losses in one of the most popular tourist areas of Puerto Escondido.

Tourism service providers have requested assistance from state authorities to begin rebuilding their businesses before the Easter holidays begin.
