The Secretary of Tourism for Guerrero, Simón Quiñones Orozco, reported that 291,782 people arrived in Guerrero on domestic flights during the first two months of 2026, an increase of 24,614 compared to 2025. He made this announcement while confirming the start of Acapulco-Querétaro and Zihuatanejo-Puebla flights on June 2nd, just in time for the summer holidays.
At the event held at the international departures area of the Acapulco International Airport, the Secretary highlighted the recovery and leading position of Guerrero’s tourist destinations. As an example, he cited the strengthened air connectivity at the Acapulco and Zihuatanejo airports, noting that Guerrero saw an increase in air passengers from 1.4 million in 2024 to 1.5 million in 2025, representing an 11 percent rise.
He then stated that in January and February, there was a significant increase in passenger arrivals by air from 2025 to 2026. In Acapulco, passenger numbers rose from 120,055 to 128,771, an increase of 8,716 passengers. In Zihuatanejo, the number increased from 147,113 to 163,011, an increase of 15,898 passengers.
He indicated that these results, based on the current upward trend in passenger numbers, project double-digit growth for both airports this year. He added that the figures he presented were not from the State Tourism Secretariat, but rather from OMA Grupo Aeroportuario Centro-Norte, which operates both airports and will invest one billion pesos in their infrastructure over the next five years.
He added that the company aims to ensure that both Acapulco and Zihuatanejo can handle the growth in passenger arrivals, reaching 2.3 million passengers, up from the current 1.4 million, and exceeding 1.5 million passengers this year.
Quiñones Orozco stated that Guerrero is strengthening its national air connectivity, attracting a greater number of tourists and diversifying its source markets, which represents new tourism and commercial opportunities and contributes to Guerrero’s economic development.
However, the secretary emphasized that despite this increase in domestic passengers, the international market should not be neglected, with the United States and Canada remaining the most important markets for Guerrero and Mexico. Therefore, he is working to open new routes from these two countries.
Volaris’ Director of Market Development, Jorge Roberto Garcia Rojas, noted that Volaris began operations 18 years ago, out of the 20 years it has been flying in Mexico. In the case of Guerrero, since it began operating, it has transported 3.6 million passengers, with 625,000 in 2025 alone.
He stated that the airline currently has eight routes in Guerrero: five to Zihuatanejo and three to Acapulco. These are in addition to the Acapulco-Querétaro route, with flights on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays, and the Zihuatanejo-Puebla route, with flights on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays.
He indicated that these routes open up opportunities, boost tourism, and strengthen regional development. They also strengthen Guerrero’s ties with important economic centers in the country, fostering cultural and commercial exchange, tourism promotion, and new business opportunities for local communities.
In her remarks, the mayor of Zihuatanejo, Lizette Tapia Castro, acknowledged the importance of the new flight connections, which attract more visitors to Zihuatanejo and the municipality of La Unión, which complement each other rather than competing for tourists.
She stated that those living in cities like Querétaro, Morelia, or Guadalajara now have an alternative way to reach Guerrero’s tourist destinations, either by air or directly by road. She maintained that there is no competition between Zihuatanejo and Acapulco, but rather two complementary tourist centers.
The Secretary of Tourism for Acapulco, Noé Peralta Herrera, indicated that efforts are underway to strengthen flights on routes operating from various parts of Mexico, such as Monterrey, where a visit with members of the tourism sector will be taking place in the coming days.
He also raised the need to establish a flight connecting Oaxaca with Acapulco to capitalize on the international tourism arriving in Oaxaca and allow visitors to also experience Acapulco’s beaches.
The event was attended by the mayor of La Unión, José Francisco Zuazo Espino, the director of the airport Axayacalt Herrera Ocaña, as well as representatives of the different chambers of hotels, restaurants, and travel agencies.
