Despite being one of the most visited places in Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo, Ixtapa Island operates without basic services, a situation that concessionaires and restaurant owners have tried to resolve for years without success.

In the past, an attempt was made to install infrastructure to provide drinking water to the island, but the project could not be completed when a boat struck a pipeline. During Eric Fernández Ballesteros’s term, bio-septic tanks were introduced, but these did not work due to the lack of fresh water.
Restaurateurs believe that before introducing drinking water, it is necessary to resolve wastewater management. Therefore, they proposed to the current mayor, Lizette Tapia, the implementation of an ecological project with a drainage system and a modern, environmentally friendly treatment plant.
Currently, they use septic tanks for waste management, which are cleaned every three months to ensure proper functioning. Despite being a federal zone, the municipality is obligated to provide services in the area.
Regarding electricity, 70 percent of the businesses have opted for solar panels. The remainder do not have this alternative due to the high cost.
Although the basic infrastructure project for the island has been discussed at various times, there is still no confirmed plan or implementation schedule, so the installation of drainage and formal services on Ixtapa Island remains an unresolved demand.
