A high school teacher in Playa del Carmen was arrested for allegedly drugging four of his students, who had to be taken to hospitals for medical treatment.

The incident occurred Thursday evening at the Luz María Zaleta High School, located in the Villas del Sol neighborhood of the city, after the students began feeling ill and called their parents.

One of the students reported that a teacher gave them what appeared to be candy and asked for their social media accounts; he also allegedly touched them inappropriately.

As soon as the incident became known, several parents gathered outside the school to confront the teacher, identified as Rubén “N,” who had to leave through another exit, although he was eventually arrested by Playa del Carmen police officers.

The Quintana Roo Attorney General’s Office confirmed the teacher’s arrest for his alleged involvement in the crime of corruption of minors. His legal status will be determined in the coming hours following an initial hearing for the formal charges and indictment.

Meanwhile, the Quintana Roo Ministry of Education announced that the teacher was identified as the likely assailant by students and staff at the school.

The mayor of Playa del Carmen, Estefanía Mercado Asencio, announced the resumption of the “backpack” operation to detect the possible entry of illicit substances into the municipality’s public schools.

This Friday, it was reported that the affected students were discharged from a private hospital where they were taken for treatment, with no further complications so far from the crime they suffered.

Just last Monday, in a separate incident, the Quintana Roo Attorney General’s Office reported drug sales at the Gabriela Mistral Secondary School in Cancún, where former students were distributing the substances from behind a wall of the school grounds.
