“Nobody can control it”: Sargassum covers the beaches of Quintana Roo

The Secretary of Tourism reported that sargassum containment measures are already underway ahead of the Easter holidays.

Secretary of Tourism Josefina Rodríguez emphasized that this is a natural phenomenon that “no one can control,” although she affirmed that actions are being taken to contain it before the Easter holidays.

All indications are that more sargassum will arrive on Mexican coasts this year than in 2025, when the amount of the macroalgae was double that recorded in 2022.

Proof of this is that in January there were 9.5 million tons of sargassum in the Atlantic and 13.6 million tons in February, figures that broke the historical record of 7.8 and 4.3 million tons respectively in the first two months of last year.

Tourism sector workers in Quintana Roo reported that the macroalgae arrived on the coasts in the first days of March.

As a result, efforts to clean the beaches have been redoubled.

Their presence is linked to climate change, especially to the increase in sea temperature, as well as variations in currents and nutrients in the water.
