Mexico will review the restriction on pork imports from Spain, imposed last November after the detection of African swine fever (ASF) in Barcelona, announced the Spanish Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, Luis Planas Puchades.
This announcement came after a meeting with the Secretary of Agriculture, Julio Berdegué, as part of his official visit to Mexico.
At a press conference at the Spanish Ambassador’s residence, Planas Puchades emphasized that the situation is under control, as his country maintains rigorous animal health measures in both the European and international markets. He expressed confidence that, through cooperation, Spanish exports to Mexico will resume, although he did not specify a date.
“He has expressed this willingness to do so, and I believe it’s not a matter of a day or two; it will take as long as necessary. As always, I have offered all the necessary supplementary information,” he stated after his meeting with his Mexican counterpart.
In November 2025, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (SADER) announced the suspension of meat imports, specifying that the restriction applies to both commercial imports and products carried by tourists entering Mexican territory.
Spain is the leading pork producer in the European Union, accounting for approximately a quarter of the bloc’s production, ahead of Germany, according to the Ministry of Agriculture.
Since then, pork, pork products, and byproducts such as hams and sausages, cured meats, pork offal for human consumption, and raw materials for pet food production have been prohibited from entering Mexico.
The Spanish Minister of Agriculture emphasized the “strong agri-food relationship” between the two nations and underscored the importance of strengthening cooperation and trade.
He also highlighted the importance of modernizing the European Union-Mexico Global Agreement to eliminate tariffs on numerous products and facilitate trade.
Spain has exported agri-food products to Mexico worth around 700 million euros in 2025, among which olive oil and wine stand out.
