Yucatán concluded its participation in the “Anato Colombia 2026” Tourism Showcase with encouraging results that promise to strengthen the tourism industry in the state. A charter flight connecting Medellín with Mérida is projected to begin operations in the second half of the year, boosting the arrival of international visitors.
The head of the Ministry of Tourism Development (Sefotur), Darío Flota Ocampo, emphasized that the outcome of this tour was extremely positive due to the establishment of numerous commercial alliances and strong interest from tour operators in investing in the region.
He highlighted that one of the most significant announcements resulting from this participation is the projected launch of a new charter flight directly connecting Medellín with Mérida, starting in the second half of this year.
He added that this new air route is a fundamental tool for boosting international tourism between Colombia and Mexico, facilitating the flow of visitors and reducing travel times.
“What’s closest is a charter flight, a route that will connect Medellín with Mérida in the second half of the year, and it’s further proof of the interest in visiting our state,” he noted.
Flota Ocampo emphasized that during business meetings and interviews with the Colombian press, security was the central theme of the discussions, as Yucatán’s perception as a safe and welcoming state is its greatest competitive advantage on the global stage.
The international sports context also works in favor of this promotional strategy, as he recalled that the Colombian national soccer team will play two matches on Mexican soil during the upcoming 2026 World Cup, representing a golden opportunity to position Mérida as a complementary destination for Colombian fans.
On the other hand, the Secretary indicated that they are already focused on the short term with the arrival of the Easter holidays, as projections for this period are optimistic, with expectations of surpassing the figures recorded in previous years.
He highlighted that while the overall average occupancy rate in the state usually fluctuates between 56 and 57 percent annually, for these next two weeks of vacation, hotel occupancy is expected to reach up to 70 percent, if conditions are favorable.
“We have many activities coming up, we have the equinox, we have the FIFA World Cup visiting the state these days, so I think we are experiencing a good moment for tourism in Yucatán,” he summarized.
