As of 4:00 PM this Tuesday, snowfall continues on Cofre de Perote volcano in Veracruz, marking the fourth snowfall of the 2025-2026 winter season in this mountainous region.
According to Jessica Iveth Luna, head of the Hydrometeorology Center of the National Water Commission (Conagua), weather conditions have favored the persistence of the snowfall, attracting visitors but also increasing risks in the area.
Given this situation, Civil Protection urged residents and tourists to follow official guidelines if planning an ascent to the volcano.
Among the main recommendations are:
Drive with caution due to potentially slippery surfaces.
Wear warm clothing due to the low temperatures.
Avoid areas at risk due to unstable terrain.
Authorities are maintaining surveillance in the area and reiterated the importance of prioritizing safety during this weather event.
Snow and sleet fell on the peaks of Cofre de Perote and Pico de Orizaba, due to the passage of cold front 41 and an arctic air mass, reported the National Water Commission (Conagua).
Luna Lagunes explained that the combination of low temperatures and humidity in the middle and upper levels of the atmosphere generated the phenomenon on Monday night.
“The passage of the cold front and the arctic air mass caused a marked drop in temperature and, combined with the humidity, resulted in snow and sleet falling on the peaks,” she explained.
Warnings issued for frost and low temperatures
Given the cold conditions, Conagua recommended that the public dress warmly, stay hydrated, and pay special attention to children and the elderly.
Frost is possible in mountainous areas in the coming days, particularly in regions like Huayacocotla, areas near Cofre de Perote, Pico de Orizaba, and the Sierra de Zongolica.
Weather improves toward the weekend
The agency forecasts that the probability of rain will decrease starting Wednesday, with a gradual increase in temperature toward the weekend.
“Warmer weather is expected between Friday and the weekend,” they stated.
