With an investment of 50 million pesos, the first phase of the national program “Safe Pathways, Walk Freely, Walk Safely” was inaugurated in this border city.

This program, which begins today, aims to strengthen security, urban mobility, and the revitalization of public spaces.

Governor Alfonso Durazo Montaño led the inauguration of the first phase of the “Safe Pathways, Walk Freely, Walk Safely” project, making San Luis Río Colorado the first city nationwide to inaugurate this strategic initiative.

The governor, along with Tania Carro Toledo, Undersecretary of Communications and Transportation for the Mexican government, and Mayor César Iván Sandoval Gámez, emphasized that this project is part of the initiatives promoted by President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo and the Sonora state government to improve lighting and the city’s appearance, providing safer and more dignified environments for Sonoran families through infrastructure that fosters social interaction and reduces hazardous areas in public spaces.

The project was developed by the Ministry of National Defense (Sedena) in coordination with the Ministry of Infrastructure, Communications and Transportation (SICT) and the Ministry of Infrastructure and Urban Development (Sidur), with an investment of 50 million pesos, to improve nearly 40 kilometers of roads within the city.

“I want to tell you that this is the first Safe Route to be inaugurated nationwide. It begins in San Luis Río Colorado, and we are starting with 40 kilometers of streetlights in this first phase, and as already mentioned, two additional phases are planned.”

“The Safe Routes that we are launching today will be a very important contribution to security, but above all to the peace of mind of families,” stated Governor Alfonso Durazo.

Among the main actions carried out are the replacement of sodium vapor lamps with 150- and 100-watt LED technology to improve nighttime visibility.

The project also included the installation of streetlights of varying heights, with 1,093 bases and 2,447 light fixtures; the placement of metering bases for connection to the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE); and an artistic intervention featuring 10 murals covering 1,200 square meters, representing regional identity.

During the event, Governor Durazo Montaño emphasized that lighting and the revitalization of public spaces are key tools for strengthening community safety and improving the quality of life for residents, especially women, children, youth, and families who travel these roads daily.
