Mexico Seeks to Eliminate Cash at Gas Stations and Toll Booths
During the 89th Banking Convention, Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum announced that the federal government, in coordination with the Bank of Mexico and private banks, is working to make digital payments mandatory at gas stations and toll booths by 2026.
The measure aims to promote the country’s digitalization, combat practices such as tax evasion, and facilitate access to electronic payment methods like CoDi. In addition, the Mexican Banking Association proposed temporarily eliminating fees for card payments at service stations, with the goal of reducing costs for consumers and encouraging the use of digital payment methods.
