With the participation of dancers from the Totonacapan region of Puebla and Veracruz, the Ministry of Tourism Development, in coordination with the Zapotitlán de Méndez city council, announced the Puwak Cultural Festival 2026, to be held from March 29 to April 5 at the sports field in this community in the Sierra Norte region.
An attendance of between 5,000 and 10,000 people is expected, along with an economic impact of approximately 10 million pesos. There will be an artisan market, coffee tasting, and a food fair, as well as sporting events such as a cross-country trail run and a “mecapal” (a traditional Mexican rope-carrying) race, in addition to a public dance.
The Government of the State of Puebla celebrates the revival of Totonac roots through a festival that also aims to revalue the customs and traditions of indigenous communities, stated Marlet Pérez Blancas, Director General of Community Tourism, representing the Secretary of Tourism Development, Carla López-Malo Villalón.
Visitors will be able to experience and appreciate ancestral dances from various communities, such as “Los Voladores,” “Los Negritos,” “Tejoneros,” the dance of the Totonac women of Tepetzintla, and others from the state of Veracruz, reported Mayor Salvador Tino Martínez. He also invited residents of Puebla to explore tourist attractions such as the Zempoala River, the Karmidas Caves, the parish church, the municipal palace, and the Morelos Bridge, among others.
Regarding the mecapal race, organizer José Luis López López explained that participants must carry typical regional products such as coffee, corn, and firewood over a distance of one kilometer.
In this way, the state administration, headed by Alejandro Armenta Mier, promotes the customs and traditions of the communities and fosters tourism within the state.
