Jorge Luis Brizuela Guevara, “El Venezolano” (The Venezuelan), an alleged associate of former Quintana Roo Governor Carlos Joaquín González, was arrested Wednesday for his suspected involvement in extortion and attempted femicide.

In a statement, the Quintana Roo State Attorney General’s Office reported that the suspect is being held in pretrial detention.

“Two arrest warrants issued by judges were executed against Jorge Luis ‘N’, a Venezuelan national and naturalized Mexican citizen, for his alleged involvement in acts that may constitute the crimes of extortion and attempted femicide, against victims whose identities are being withheld,” the statement said.

According to local media reports, the businessman had ties to Quintana Roo’s political elite for several years, including Carlos Joaquín González, who currently serves as Mexico’s ambassador to Canada. In 2020, hours after filing a complaint with the Attorney General’s Office (FGR) regarding threats against him, Brizuela survived an armed attack in Quintana Roo.

The arrest took place while he was in a condominium in Shark Tower, Cancún.

According to the Attorney General’s report, the extortion charge was committed in December 2024, when he intimidated a journalist in a phone call, first by phone and then by text message, demanding the deletion of his publications.

“He allegedly made intimidating and coercive statements, intending to prevent the journalist from publishing and to force him to delete various articles related to his journalistic work, warning him that if he did not comply, he could be harmed,” the report stated.

Regarding the attempted femicide case, the Attorney General’s Office (FGE) specified that the victim was a teenager, whose information will remain confidential.

De acuerdo con el reporte de la Fiscalía, el delito de extorsión lo cometió en diciembre de 2024.
