Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo has seen a 12 percent increase in foreign visitors, primarily from Canada, who are now extending their stays to five months, reported Lizette Tapia Castro, mayor of this tourist destination.
In an interview with El Sol de Acapulco, she announced that direct flights from Canada began operating in October from Vancouver, Montreal, Toronto, and Calgary. According to OMA data, these flights have increased to twice a week, compared to the previous one per week.
“Zihuatanejo is experiencing sustained growth, with double-digit increases of 12 percent compared to last year. Each year we continue to grow, and we have a very loyal tourism sector,” said Lizette Tapia.
Seat occupancy on flights from Canada has exceeded 82 percent, reaching 90 percent in some cases, resulting in high passenger volume and demonstrating strong demand.
He added that Canadian tourists who return to Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo every year have now extended their stays from three months to five months.
“Canadian tourists are very loyal to Zihuatanejo; they come year after year, and what’s interesting is that this year they are extending their stays. They used to stay two or three months, and now they are practically staying five months,” he noted.
He mentioned that this increase confirms Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo as an attractive tourist destination for the international market and a constantly growing engine for the region.
