The Mexican government has raised concerns among millions of citizens and foreign residents: those without a valid passport may face restrictions when crossing borders, both entering and leaving the country.
The measure aims to end the practice of postponing passport renewal until the last minute.
Far from being a simple recommendation, the current regulations make it clear that traveling with an expired or soon-to-expire passport can become a real headache: from the inability to get an appointment in time to being stranded at the airport unable to board.
The regulations are clear and allow no exceptions: if a Mexican passport has expired, the holder will not be allowed to leave the country. The vast majority of airlines and international immigration authorities require that the document be valid for at least six months at the time of travel.
Although Mexican citizens can re-enter the country with an expired passport, their departure is immediately blocked.
To renew a Mexican passport, after scheduling an appointment at one of the offices in Mexico or at consular offices, the following requirements must be met:
Present the original passport to be renewed. In case of theft, loss, or destruction of the previous passport, a report must be filed with the ministerial authority within Mexico and, if abroad, with the competent authority of the country where the passport is located. The form provided by the passport or consular office for this purpose must also be completed, and the requirements must be submitted again as if it were a first-time application.
Prove Mexican nationality. If the applicant’s nationality cannot be verified through consultation of the databases, systems, or files to which the Ministry has access, one of the following documents must be presented: birth certificate, certificate of Mexican nationality, declaration of Mexican nationality by birth, naturalization certificate, citizen identity card, or consular registration certificate.
Present a valid original official identification, such as an INE voter ID card, consular registration card, or other similar document. For more information, you can visit the Mexican Passport website.
Passport expired more than 10 years ago: the rule few know about
There is a situation that many are unaware of and that can lead to unforeseen complications: if a passport has not been renewed for more than a decade, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE) does not treat it as a simple renewal.
In these cases, the holder must complete the process as if applying for their first passport, which involves submitting more complete documentation and undergoing a longer procedure.
This condition especially affects those who have lived abroad for many years or simply have never needed to travel.
