So far this year, 668 scorpion stings have been reported in the state, with the highest concentration in the municipalities of Querétaro and Corregidora, reported Health Secretary Martina Pérez Rendón, who warned that a more venomous species inhabits this area.
She explained that the number of incidents remains similar to that recorded in 2015, without a significant increase, although she reiterated the call for the public to remain vigilant.
“We have a total of 668 injuries; they are most prevalent among young people between the ages of 25 and 44, but it is something that can happen to anyone,” she explained.
She indicated that most cases are reported in the state capital, although she clarified that this may be influenced by hospital capacity in the area.
“They are concentrated in the municipality of Querétaro; Corregidora is another municipality, although in Querétaro we have the report from the unit that handles it, so the data is likely skewed,” she commented.
She emphasized that, contrary to popular perception, the most dangerous scorpions are not found in the Sierra Gorda, but rather in the central region of the state.
“The most toxic scorpion is found here in the central region, in Querétaro and Corregidora; there are scorpions in the mountains, they also cause discomfort, but they are less toxic, they are a different species,” she indicated.
In the event of a sting, she recommended applying ice to the affected area and seeking medical attention, especially in the case of minors. The official stressed that all hospitals have the necessary antivenom to treat these cases promptly.
“We have the antivenom, the fabotherapy, available in all our hospitals,” she stated.
