A skull-shaped cenote in Tulum? Here’s how to get there from Cancun airport

Cenote Calavera, also known as the “Temple of Doom,” has become one of the most unique and sought-after cenotes in the Mexican Caribbean thanks to its distinctive appearance and mysterious atmosphere.

Unlike other open and spacious cenotes, this site stands out for being partially covered and having three circular openings at the top, giving it a skull-like shape when viewed from above, hence its name.

This cenote is located in the municipality of Tulum, Quintana Roo, on the Tulum-Cobá highway, approximately 3 kilometers from the town center. Its proximity to the city makes it an accessible option for those staying in Tulum or for those traveling from Cancún in search of a different experience during their vacation.

The entrance fee is usually around 250 Mexican pesos per person, although it can vary depending on the season. It is generally recommended to bring cash, as they do not always have card payment terminals. Basic services are available at the site, and life jackets are sometimes available for rent.

If you wish to visit the cenote from Cancun International Airport, one of the most convenient and economical ways to get there is by ADO bus. These buses depart from the airport terminal or the central bus station in Cancun to the Tulum Bus Terminal, with tickets typically costing between $136 and $365 MXN.

Once at the Tulum terminal, you can take a taxi, shared van, or pickup truck to the cenote. The journey from downtown Tulum to Calavera is short and easy by local transport or taxi.

Another option from Tulum is to take a shared van to Cobá from downtown and ask the driver to let you off near the cenote entrance. This type of transport is usually inexpensive (around 30–40 pesos per person) and departs when full.
