From Tampico to Harvard: Melissa is accepted into a program affiliated with the prestigious school to specialize

Although it sounds like something out of a medical drama, like The Pitt, the achievement of Melissa Montserrat Cruz Mendoza, originally from Tampico, is real: she was accepted into one of the most selective programs in the United States and will complete her residency at a hospital affiliated with Harvard University, specializing in pediatrics and anesthesiology.

Melissa’s journey to one of the world’s most prestigious universities began at age 14, when she decided to leave Tampico and move to the United States in search of better educational opportunities.

“At 14, I moved to Kingsville, Texas, alone with my older sister. She was 19 and I was 14. My parents and my whole family stayed here, but I always knew I wanted to better myself, and when I had the opportunity to leave, I took it,” she shared with EL SOL DE TAMPICO.

In Texas, she finished high school and later entered university, where she began building her path toward her dream of becoming a doctor.

At 21, Melissa realized she could go to Harvard.
She first earned her bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Sciences, a prerequisite for applying to medical school in the United States.

“There, you have to complete a degree first. Then you have to reapply to medical school… Many people spend years trying to get in,” she explained.

Although she always knew she wanted to study medicine, Melissa admitted that Harvard wasn’t in her plans. However, her perspective changed during medical school when she had the opportunity to do a research internship in Boston.

“It was the first time I went to Harvard, and I realized I really liked it. I said I was going to work as hard as I could to be able to go back,” recounted the professional, who at 24 was accepted into the university.

Melissa was accepted into one of the combined pediatrics and anesthesiology programs, considered among the most selective in the United States.

“There are only five programs in the entire United States that combine pediatrics and anesthesiology. They are Harvard, Johns Hopkins, Stanford, Milwaukee, and Pittsburgh,” she explained.

Of all of them, she was selected to do her residency at a hospital affiliated with Harvard University in Boston.

“I’ll be at Harvard for at least five years, but then I have to do my subspecialties for another four years. In total, it’s about nine years; at Harvard, some years they accept one person and other years two,” Melissa explained.

“In the entire United States, they accept seven or eight people for this combined program,” her family added.

The young woman, who says she misses the tacos from Tampico, believes that one of the productions that most closely reflects current medical reality is The Pitt, which is even partially filmed in Pittsburgh.

“I feel it’s one of the most accurate series about what we experience in hospitals,” she said.

Melissa emphasized that her family’s support was fundamental to achieving her goals.

“You must put yourself first, your goals and your dreams. There will be times when you feel sad or tired, but if you have the support of other people you can get through it,” she pointed out.
