One day after Pam Bondi’s departure as U.S. Attorney was announced, the Department of Justice highlighted her work, along with Assistant Attorney General Todd Blanche, in combating drug cartels and their leaders.

It also emphasized that among her three main achievements were: the killing of Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, alias “El Mencho,” leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG); the capture of former Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro; and the fact that El Mayo, co-founder of the Sinaloa Cartel, pleaded guilty to federal charges.

“Under Trump’s leadership, this Department of Justice has charged more than 125,000 people with crimes since the beginning of the second Trump administration and has decimated drug cartels and their leaders,” the U.S. Justice Department wrote on its Twitter account.

On February 14, in his first State of the Union address, President Donald Trump also suggested that his administration had taken down “El Mencho.”

The president described the deceased drug lord as the “most sinister drug kingpin.” At that time, he also reiterated his claim that drug trafficking controls a large part of Mexico, a claim repeatedly rejected by Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum and members of her cabinet.

The leader of the CJNG cartel was killed on February 22 during an operation by Mexican federal forces in Tapalpa, Jalisco.

The operation was carried out by the Mexican Army, National Guard, and federal authorities, with U.S. intelligence support, but not directly by U.S. forces.

Authorities intervened after “El Mencho” was located in a cabin in a residential area of Tapalpa. Upon arrival, the drug lord managed to escape into the wooded area, but he was wounded in the ensuing confrontation and died while being transported by Army helicopter for medical attention.

His death unleashed a wave of violence with roadblocks, fires, and attacks in several states across the country, leaving 25 members of the federal forces dead.

Trump announced this Thursday that Pamela Bondi, who assumed the position of Attorney General in February 2025, was leaving her post. This change came amid speculation about the former official’s performance.

For weeks, there had been rumors about Trump’s discontent with Bondi, who had been one of his staunchest supporters even before taking office.

However, Pam was not delivering the results the president expected, including in the case of the Jeffrey Epstein files or Trump’s legal proceedings against political adversaries that did not advance.
