Through social media, tourists denounced alleged vendors for digging a channel right on the beach in Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca, to dump wastewater directly into the sea.
This action was shared and quickly went viral online, as it occurred during Holy Week and in one of the state’s most iconic tourist destinations.
The incident was captured on video by visitors who recorded the moment the vendors coordinated and began digging the channel in the sand.
The video generated numerous comments and, above all, complaints to the relevant authorities, urging them to address this issue, which has become a public health concern given the high influx of tourists during this holiday period.
After the video was released, the Oaxaca State Health Secretariat (SSO) stated in a press release that it had launched an investigation into the incident to verify the facts and take appropriate action.
In a letter dated yesterday, the Oaxaca Health Services (SSO) reported that the Oaxaca State Commission for Protection Against Sanitary Risks will conduct a health inspection at the tourist destination where the incident allegedly occurred.
The inspection will take place in the hotel zone located in the main bay of Puerto Escondido, in the municipality of San Pedro Mixtepec, with the objective of verifying the physical and sanitary conditions of the site,” the letter states.
In addition, the SSO specified that these actions are part of the ongoing health surveillance operations, aimed at preventing risks and protecting the health of national and international tourists during the current holiday period.
Furthermore, the institution reiterated its commitment to public health and called on visitors to contribute to the care and cleanliness of the beaches.
Finally, to date, Oaxaca authorities have not reported whether they have corroborated the events shown in the video, or if anyone has been sanctioned for polluting the seawater.
