Agricultural producers in the state of Chihuahua announced a strike with road and rail blockades starting this Monday, as part of a national mobilization that also includes truckers, with the goal of pressuring the federal government to fulfill outstanding agreements.
The main action is scheduled for 10:00 a.m. on the Pan-American Highway, at kilometer 20, where one of the most visible points of the protest in the state is expected.
Eraclio “Yako” Rodríguez, leader of the National Front for the Rescue of the Mexican Countryside, reported that the decision was made after a meeting with representatives of producers and truckers from at least 20 states across the country.
The leader indicated that the agreement stipulates remaining on the roads and rail lines for as long as necessary, until federal authorities address the commitments made at the end of last year.
Rodríguez stated that the goal is for the day’s events to unfold peacefully, without confrontations, but with the firm intention of generating pressure to achieve changes in public policy related to agriculture.
He explained that the agricultural sector is facing a productivity crisis stemming from the lack of fair prices, as well as the negative effects that, they assert, the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) has had on national production.
He also denounced security problems on the country’s highways, attributed to the lack of response and commitment from the federal police forces responsible for surveillance.
He further emphasized the lack of support for the families of truckers who have been victims of violence, stating that the State must assume the responsibility of guaranteeing security and support for those affected.
In Chihuahua, the blockades will take place on sections of highway such as Jiménez, as well as at toll booths in the state capital and the possible occupation of railway lines; while in Ciudad Juárez, the Pan-American Highway will be blocked. However, it was clarified that, for now, no blockades are planned at international crossings.
