The National Chambers of Commerce of Mérida and Progreso project that the Easter holidays will generate an economic impact of over 1.59 billion pesos, driven primarily by domestic tourism.
The business sector stated that approximately 50,000 people will arrive in the port of Progreso this coming weekend, between Friday and Sunday, which will boost commercial activity in the area.
They also noted that a significant number of local, national, and international tourists visited other ports such as Sisal and Celestún, which will conclude the holidays with substantial economic benefits.
And during the second weekend of the current holiday period, a large influx of visitors was reported on Yucatán’s beaches, particularly in the port of Progreso, where more than 25,000 people crowded the traditional boardwalk yesterday, Easter Sunday.
Restaurant owners experienced a significant economic boost, with most reporting full houses. They are also confident that the influx of vacationers will continue, and even increase, during this final week.
“Food and beverage businesses saw a good economic impact, with some even selling out of their products. The large number of visitors also benefited service providers and businesses in other ports, such as Chelem and Chuburná,” stated Áurea Gómez Novelo, Municipal Director of Tourism for Progreso.
However, visitors did encounter some inconveniences, primarily due to traffic problems caused by the arrival of thousands of private vehicles, which created chaos in the city center and along the waterfront.
