World Green Plan: drastic measures to avoid chaos in the capital

Mexico City Mayor Clara Brugada dropped a bombshell that has the entire business sector reeling: she wants to bring back remote work! With the 2026 World Cup just around the corner this June, the mayor issued an urgent call to the private sector to send their employees to work from home.

According to Brugada, the city won’t be able to handle the traffic chaos that will be expected with the thousands of tourists who will flood the capital, so the “Green World Cup” plan is the perfect excuse to empty the streets and try to prevent the air from becoming unbreathable during the sporting event.

But that’s not all; children will also be staying home! The plan includes direct negotiations with educational authorities to suspend classes on match days.

The goal is for students to enjoy the World Cup, but the reality is to prevent school buses from clogging up a Mexico City that already suffers from perpetual traffic. Furthermore, the Zócalo will be a “green peace” zone: no fireworks or single-use plastics, only recycled cups and locally produced cactus snacks. While some see this as a respite, others wonder if the city is truly prepared for the event or if these measures are merely a band-aid to mask the fact that traffic in the capital is about to collapse.
