The Yucatecan capital ranks third nationally as a romance tourism destination, standing out for its weddings of both local and international couples. Armando Casares Espinoza, head of the City Council’s Tourism Unit, confirmed the growing demand in this sector.
Every weekend, Mérida registers between 10 and 15 destination weddings. This boom positions the city behind San Miguel de Allende in the competition for this type of tourism. Event planning is so intense that some haciendas have booked dates up to two years in advance.
Casares reported that last weekend, 12 weddings of out-of-towners took place at different locations. These events not only benefit the couples but also generate a positive economic impact on various sectors, including hotels, restaurants, and transportation services. The official emphasized the importance of this sector to the local economy.
The Mérida City Council seeks to strengthen this tourism offering through training for wedding planners. An international certification program will be held on April 22nd and 23rd to better prepare wedding planners. The city is also promoting other tourism sectors, such as meetings and events and sports tourism.
With the 2026 FIFA World Cup in mind, the City Council has intensified its tourism promotion efforts with the campaign “Between Goals, Come to Mérida.” This strategy aims to attract fans attending matches in cities like Mexico City, Guadalajara, and Monterrey. Collaborations with airlines such as Viva Aerobús and Aeroméxico will facilitate travel packages for visitors, with the goal of attracting between 150,000 and 200,000 tourists.
