“They get cleaned and two days later they’re dirty again”: Trash in the drains causes flooding in downtown Mérida

The flooding that occurs in the streets of Mérida’s Historic Center after heavy rains, as happened a few weeks ago, is mainly due to the accumulation of trash in the drainage system, which obstructs it and causes water to pool, according to Carlos Estrella Escalante, former president of the College of Civil Engineers of Yucatán.

He explained that the storm drain system is responsible for removing rainwater from streets, sidewalks, and public spaces through grates, ditches, and wells that allow infiltration into the subsoil. However, when these spaces become filled with debris such as plastic, leaves, or grease, the flow slows down.

One of the main problems causing this situation, he explained, is a lack of civic responsibility, since people constantly throw trash in the streets, causing the grates to become clogged even a few days after they have been cleaned.

Two people were injured when the Centenario train in Mérida overturned.

For this reason, he called for citizen participation, so that each community takes ownership of public spaces and contributes to their upkeep, as these represent the collective well-being of the entire area.
