More than 2,000 phone lines used for extortion in the state of Veracruz were deactivated during April 2026, confirmed Attorney General Lisbeth Aurelia Jiménez Aguirre. She emphasized that this crime is decreasing in the state.

In a press conference this Tuesday, May 5, Jiménez Aguirre presented some of the security measures implemented in the state, including those aimed at combating extortion. She highlighted that since December 2025—when she took office as Attorney General following the resignation of Verónica Giadáns—there has been a decrease in this crime in the state.

In that regard, she announced that as of April 2026, the Specialized Unit for Combating Kidnapping and Extortion had deactivated 2,702 phone numbers used for extortion in Veracruz. Regarding this, she pointed out that these actions are carried out by individuals located in other states or in prison. In January 2026, 792 phone lines were disconnected; in February, 722; in March, 606; and in April, 582.

“What the Specialized Unit for Combating Kidnapping and Extortion does is disable these lines, because many times these phone lines, and even the extortion itself, originate from other states or are carried out by individuals who are incarcerated. Therefore, these lines are already disabled,” the prosecutor explained.
