The municipality of Tampico is seeking to attract international tourism in the lead-up to the FIFA World Cup, which will take place this June. This will be facilitated by an agreement signed with Asicotur.

Karime Cámara Chaín, Director of Tourism, indicated that an agreement was signed with the International Association for Cooperation and Tourism Development (Asicotur) during the Tianguis Turístico (Tourism Fair) in Acapulco.

Asicotur is an agency that works with countries worldwide, and the goal is to attract international tourists visiting Nuevo León or Mexico City, the host cities for the World Cup.

“We are now in our second year of working with them. They have included Tampico in their itineraries, and we are confident that there will be groups from Tampico during the 2026 World Cup, so we will surely have good news to share,” stated the Director of Tourism.

She indicated that there is a real possibility of an unprecedented influx of international tourists starting in June, and that the destination needs to be ready to demonstrate its tourism capacity.

“This is definitely beneficial for Mexico. The northern route will be advantageous because of the World Cup, as tourists usually choose tours through central or southern parts of the country, like Oaxaca, but now there are real opportunities,” she stated.

This is a way to increase tourism in the area and showcase the destination’s potential, the official explained, noting the growing number of natural attractions in Tampico and Ciudad Madero, including Miramar Beach.

“Mayor Mónica Villarreal Anaya has been tirelessly promoting the area; she is our main tourism promoter. She travels, brings groups, and helps secure tourism events and conventions,” the official stated.

Cámara Chaín also highlighted that this is an opportune moment, as the southern region is one of the safest in the country, which benefits tourism in Tamaulipas.

“I can honestly say that in the INEGI statistics, we rank seventh, which is reflected in Tampico’s safety,” he emphasized, adding that this should be leveraged from a tourism perspective.
