With music, food, and activities for all ages, the Hidalgo Market is commemorating its 81st anniversary with a day-long celebration that brings together vendors and visitors in a festive atmosphere.
Carlos Alberto Franco Ibarra, leader of the vendors, explained that the celebration began with a mass in thanksgiving for another year of the market’s existence.
Afterward, the sound of a mariachi band filled the aisles of both the upper and lower levels, where attendees not only applauded but also thoroughly enjoyed the music, making it one of the highlights of the festivities.
Following the musical procession, the program continued with folk dance performances and a singer to liven up the atmosphere for the families in attendance.
Later, around 3:00 p.m., a food tasting will be held, featuring dishes prepared by the vendors themselves, who will share some of the market’s rich culinary offerings.

Later in the event, one of the most anticipated acts will be the lucha libre (Mexican wrestling), which will begin at 5:00 p.m. with the setup of a ring outside the market.
After the match, the festivities will conclude with a dance open to the public, bringing the day’s events to a close.
Amidst the celebration, there was also time for reflection.
Pedro Torres, a candy vendor, shared that his connection to the market is practically lifelong, as it is as old as the building itself.
He recounted that his parents already had a stall, and he currently represents the fourth generation, while his children continue the family tradition.
The vendor expressed his satisfaction at seeing the market reach its 81st anniversary, especially after having overcome difficult times, such as the fire more than five decades ago that marked its history.
Today, he said, the Mercado Hidalgo stands as a meeting place that preserves its essence and continues to be a fundamental part of the city’s daily life.
