In recent hours, social media users have reported sightings of Black Hawk helicopters flying over various areas of Baja California, particularly in municipalities near the U.S. border, such as Tecate.
The sightings, accompanied by videos, have generated concern and questions about a possible operational presence of U.S. military aircraft in Mexican territory, heightening tensions between the two countries.
According to citizen reports, the helicopters were seen flying at low altitude over areas such as Tecate, San Vicente (Ensenada), San Felipe, and Laguna Salada. One of the most widely shared videos shows an aircraft moving over mountainous terrain under cloudy skies, reinforcing the perception of proximity to Mexican territory.
National security expert Ghaleb Krame linked the sightings to Secretary Marco Rubio’s participation in the 2026 Chiefs of Mission Conference of the U.S. Southern Command (SOUTHCOM), held in Florida. So far, there is no official confirmation regarding the origin of the aircraft.
These reports come weeks after the incident in Chihuahua, where two U.S. agents and two Mexican officials died following a drug trafficking operation. Although the incident resulted from a vehicle accident, the critical issue was the involvement of foreign agents without confirmed federal authorization.
The Mexican government responded with a diplomatic note and opened federal investigations. The case led to the resignation of the state prosecutor and generated political pressure on the governor, in addition to creating a point of contention in bilateral security cooperation.
In this context, the new helicopter sightings have reignited questions on social media about the true extent of collaboration between the two countries and the limits of the U.S. presence on Mexican soil.
