The Yucatán Peninsula continues to be one of the regions with the highest prevalence of monkeypox in Mexico, after Quintana Roo confirmed a new case of the disease.
According to the most recent Epidemiological Surveillance Report from the Federal Government’s Ministry of Health, corresponding to the week of April 25, the region has accumulated 12 confirmed cases in 2016.
Currently, Quintana Roo and Yucatán each report six cases, while Campeche remains without any registered infections. Nationally, Mexico City leads the list with 23 confirmed cases, followed by Yucatán and Quintana Roo, both with six active cases.
Behind them are Puebla with three infections; the State of Mexico with two; and Sonora, Guanajuato, and Chihuahua with one case each. These figures place the Yucatán Peninsula among the regions with the highest circulation of the disease in the country, particularly due to the international tourism activity that characterizes Quintana Roo and Yucatán.
The behavior of the disease also shows an increase compared to 2015. During the same period last year, the peninsula only had two confirmed cases: both in Quintana Roo. Now, the number has risen to 12 infections distributed between Quintana Roo and Yucatán.
Although no deaths related to the disease have been recorded in the region so far, health authorities are maintaining active epidemiological surveillance to detect possible new infections.
According to epidemiological monitoring, several of the cases detected on the peninsula have been linked to patients who had contact with people from abroad or with a history of international travel.
This trend has been one of the main factors observed by health authorities, given that Quintana Roo and Yucatán are destinations with high international tourist traffic throughout the year.
Specialists have pointed out that the constant movement of travelers facilitates the spread of infectious diseases, particularly in tourist areas where there is frequent interaction between visitors and the local population.
What is monkeypox?
Monkeypox is a viral disease that can cause symptoms such as fever, muscle pain, swollen lymph nodes, and skin lesions or rashes.
Although most patients recover without serious complications, authorities recommend seeking medical attention for any suspicious symptoms, especially if there has been close contact with infected individuals.
The Ministry of Health is maintaining epidemiological surveillance in the region to monitor the disease’s behavior and prevent further spread of the virus on the Yucatán Peninsula.
