An alleged case of discrimination is capturing attention on social media. It involves a video recorded by a foreigner to expose a street vendor who blocked a pedestrian walkway with his motorcycle in the Aldea Zama gated community in Tulum, Quintana Roo.
However, the Argentine man’s complaint went viral due to the disrespectful way he blocked the Mexican man’s path, sparking divided opinions among internet users.
In the video, the Argentine man is seen blocking a pozol vendor on a motorcycle and telling him, “You can’t come through here, you know that. You can’t come through here with a motorcycle. You know that very well, back up.”
When the Mexican man refuses, he asks him to move aside so he can turn around and leave with his cart of drinks. However, the foreigner ignores him and threatens to expose him on social media.
“You jerk, you don’t live here. Go back to your neighborhood, go back to your own place… don’t come here,” the Argentinian yelled as the pozol vendor walked away.
The clip was shared by a page dedicated to the community living in the Riviera Maya, encouraging them to buy local: “An Argentinian got out of line with a Mexican who sells pozol. If you see our friend, please buy some from him, that drink is delicious, it’s ice-cold and has cacao (…) we welcome many people of different nationalities here, be kind,” the post reads.
The response from dozens of internet users sparked an intense debate about the circumstances of both men, because although the motorcycle wasn’t allowed on the pedestrian walkway, the foreigner’s reaction to the situation was labeled classist and racist.
“In Tulum, the first to mistreat Mexicans are the vendors and taxi drivers.”
“The pozol vendors are a local treasure; they work incredibly hard all day.”
“Imagine physically harassing someone, which is illegal, just to tell them they’re doing something illegal.”
“Those of us who have had the misfortune of encountering a reckless person riding a motorcycle or electric scooter will agree that they did the right thing.”
