Playa del Carmen: Power outage lasting more than 24 hours affects businesses

The power outage crisis in Playa del Carmen continues to worsen, after residents reported more than 24 hours without electricity in various neighborhoods and subdivisions on the west side of the city.

Since early Friday morning, residents began reporting power failures, a situation that has generated frustration, uncertainty, and disruptions in both homes and businesses.

“Now the situation is truly unbearable,” said affected residents, who pointed out that the lack of electricity has caused problems preserving food, using electronic devices, and coping with the current high temperatures.

Due to the blackouts, several traffic lights on 125th Avenue were temporarily out of service, complicating traffic flow in various parts of the city. In response, the Secretariat of Citizen Security deployed traffic officers to expedite the flow of vehicles and prevent accidents.

Municipal authorities reported that they are in communication with the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) to monitor the progress of the service restoration efforts. However, there is still no concrete answer as to when the problem, which has left thousands of families in this tourist destination without power, will be resolved.

This Sunday, Estefanía Mercado, mayor of Playa del Carmen, stated that “after these three days of blackouts, the CFE sent 10 teams of specialists to work in different parts of the city and identify the faults that have affected the electricity supply.”

As reported by REPORTUR.mx, a massive influx of sargassum seaweed has also invaded the beaches in downtown Playa del Carmen, specifically Fundadores Park, the fiscal pier, and other central areas.
