Cancun International Airport registered a 4.3 percent decrease in passenger traffic during April 2016, handling 2,464,479 travelers, according to the latest financial report from Grupo Aeroportuario del Sureste (ASUR).

This figure represents a drop compared to the 2.57 million passengers reported in April of last year, reflecting a reduction in both domestic and international flights, amidst adjustments in tourist flows to various destinations within the country.

The international segment, the main driver of tourism in the Mexican Caribbean, registered 1,674,788 passengers, a year-over-year decrease of 3.7 percent. Meanwhile, the domestic market closed with 789,691 passengers, equivalent to a 5.4 percent decrease.

Despite the decline, Cancún remains the most important airport in the ASUR network and Mexico’s main tourist entry point, accounting for more than 72 percent of the total passenger traffic reported by the airport group in the country during April.

From January to April, the airport handled more than 10.4 million passengers, maintaining its position among the busiest tourist airports in Latin America.

During the first quarter of the year, Grupo Aeroportuario del Sureste (ASUR) registered a 0.1% decrease in passenger traffic compared to the same period in 2015.
