On May 30th and 31st, the community of Dolores Hidalgo in the municipality of Huitziltepec will host the 22nd annual “Pitaya and Pitahaya Fair 2026,” where at least 6,000 people from Puebla, the State of Mexico, Oaxaca, and Tlaxcala are expected to attend.
The Ministry of Tourism Development, in coordination with municipal authorities, presented the festival to encourage tourism and boost sales of these fruits, which are sold in the municipalities of Huixcolotla, Tepeaca, and Puebla, as well as in various other states and in the United States.
The fair will feature 250 producers and artisans, a food fair with a variety of dishes made from pitaya and pitahaya, and free cultural and artistic events.
The Director of Tourism Products, Mayra Yvet Sotero Juárez, representing the Secretary of Tourism Development for the State of Puebla, Carla López-Malo Villalón, stated that the event provides support to producers and recognizes their work. She also emphasized that it promotes community-based tourism, in accordance with the instructions of Governor Alejandro Armenta Mier.
After thanking the State Government for its support in promoting the event, Mayor Iván Rojas Cortés reported that Huitziltepec ranks first in pitaya production nationwide, and that the Dolores Hidalgo district accounts for 82 percent of the municipality’s annual harvest.
Highlighting the economic boost that the cactus represents for the community, Councilor for Public Works, Urban Development, Services, and Ecology, Eustacio Martínez García, explained that the fair will feature tastings and sales of pitaya-derived products such as jam, ice cream, popsicles, artisanal wines, empanadas, desserts, and refreshing drinks.
