Uncertainty in Playa del Carmen over alleged loss of environmental certifications

80

A rumor began circulating on social media platforms like Twitter (formerly X) claiming that Playa del Carmen had lost the dual environmental certification for 14 beaches and another that was in the process of being certified, which would represent a significant decrease in its Blue Flag and Platinum Beach distinctions. However, there is still no official confirmation of this information.

This alleged loss has sparked concern among residents and tourism service providers, given the importance these certifications have for the destination’s image as a benchmark for sustainability and environmental quality.

To date, there has been no official statement from the Playa del Carmen City Council, Blue Flag Mexico, or the Mexican Institute for Standardization and Certification (IMNC) confirming the cancellation of these distinctions.

The latest official statement maintains eight Blue Flag certifications.

The most recent institutional information regarding these awards was published on August 14, 2025, by the Municipal Government. In that statement, the City Council reported that the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) awarded eight Blue Flag distinctions for the 2025-2026 season to the following beaches:

Punta Esmeralda
Montecarlo
Pelícanos
Petrel Norte
Playa 72
Playa 88
Cisne
Xcalacoco

What are the implications of losing these certifications?

The Blue Flag and Platinum Beach distinctions are awards granted to beaches that meet strict standards for cleanliness, water quality, accessibility, environmental education, and safety. A potential loss of these certifications could affect:

The international perception of the destination.

The confidence of domestic and international tourists.
Competitiveness compared to other destinations in the Mexican Caribbean.
Tourism promotion based on sustainability criteria. Given this, without an official stance, the issue remains in the realm of speculation, and will be so until the municipal authorities or the certifying bodies issue a formal statement; meanwhile, the latest available institutional record indicates that Playa del Carmen maintains at least eight valid Blue Flag distinctions.
